Former District of New Mexico Magistrate Robert DeGiacomo died in Seattle on Sunday, March 24, 2007. He will be buried with full military honors on Friday, March 30, 2007 at 11:00 at the Tahoma National Cemetery near Seattle.
Judge DeGiacomo was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 28, 1923. He attended Boston College for both his undergraduate work and law school, receiving his J.D. in 1947.
Along with private practice in Boston, Judge DeGiacomo former
positions included the Director of the Leonardo DaVinci Fund at the Bologna
Center, Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies , 1971-73; Bar
Counsel for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1974-79.
On January 30, 1980, he was appointed a Magistrate Judge of the District of Massachusetts, serving in that district until 1986. He was recalled to the District of New Mexico on May 10, 1995; retiring on January 25, 2002.
He was married to Jean Barbara Piotti and they had four daughters and one son.
In 1999, Judge DeGiacomo testified against a man who had sent a threatening letter to his home and had also placed a threatening phone call to his home. An article in the August 12, 1999 Albuquerque Tribune stated. "It wasn’t hard for a disgruntled Georgia man to find U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert J. DeGiacomo’s home telephone number. The judge has it listed in the phone book 'because I am not ashamed of who I am, what I am and where I live.'"
